Creative Ways to Decorate Your Baby’s Nursery!

Decorating your baby’s nursery is such a special part of preparing for their arrival. Although nursery decorating can be exciting and spark a creative flare in us expecting mamas, for many it can also be overwhelming and last on our to do list. Therefore, if you're looking for some ideas and creative ways to combine style, function, comfort and early learning, then here is the perfect place to start.

As two Kiwi mums and co-owners of Nosey Toesie, we believe a baby's nursery should be a safe place for night feed and snuggles, milestones to be reached and witnessed, magical moments to unfold as well as a space for tears of exhaustion, while also questioning what we are doing and why our little one is unsettled at 2 in the morning.

A baby's sleep and play space should inspire curiosity and comfort- so we've put together our top creative tips for decorating your nursery alongside our best seller Touch 'n Go Play Mat and our adorable Bumble Bee Baby Mobile.

1. Start with Just a Few Essentials

You don’t need a fully styled 'Perfect" nursery on day one, just focus on the basics:

  • A safe bassinet or cot

  • A comfy chair for feeding/snuggles (Tip: Add a side table by your nursing chair for your drink bottle and much needed snacks)

  • Soft lighting - (Salt lamp or red light)

  • Nappy Change Mat/area

  • A cosy neutral play mat - (our Touch 'n Go Play Mat)

Everything else can come with time

2. Choose a Simple Colour Palette

Pick 2–3 colors you love and stick with them. If you want to create a neutral nursery, stick to earthy tones, soft neutrals, and nature-inspired colours (like beige, mustard yellow, and warm browns), these colour tones create a peaceful vibe and are easy to match across textiles, toys, and wall art.

3. Use Multi-Functional Pieces

Look for items that serve more than one purpose. Our Touch 'n Go Play Mat for example, is both a safe place for baby to explore, develop their senses and a beautiful design element. The same goes for a set of draws which you can use as a change table by putting a change mat on the top, baskets that double as storage for toys or nappies or a baby mobile like our Bumble Bee Baby Mobile that provides your baby with familiarity to their sleep or change space, and is a cute piece of nursery decor.

4. Add Personal Touches (Not Just Pinterest Trends)

Your nursery should reflect you and your little one. Frame a handwritten note to them, hang a family photo, or include something you have handmade or a loved one has handmade. These little touches matter far more than what’s “on trend.”

5. Keep Decor Baby-Friendly

Choose safe, natural materials whenever possible. Look for non-toxic paint, wooden or eco friendly toys, and toys or decor free from harsh chemicals.

Product safety is very important to us, at Nosey Toesie, all our products are designed to be baby safe and provide parents peace of mind.

6. Leave Room to Grow

The best nurseries are the ones that feel warm and welcoming- not overcrowded. You don’t need to fill every wall or corner right away. Babies grow fast, and so will their needs. Leave a little breathing room so the space can evolve with your little one- whether that’s adding bookshelves, a toy rotation system, or art they create later on.

7. Don’t Aim for Perfect - Aim for Peaceful

It’s okay if the walls aren’t painted yet or the theme isn’t “finished.” What matters most is that the room feels warm, safe, and is ready for you and your baby to make memories. Don't sweat the small stuff, your creative moments may happen naturally when decorating your baby's nursery, giving it your personal touch.

8. Involve the Senses, Not Just the Eyes

Whilst having a cute and aesthetically pleasing nursery is nice, remember look's don't matter to your little one, a nursery where they can utilise their senses touch, sound, sight and movement means a lot more, as these sensory cues can help your baby feel secure, safe and soothed.

Our Touch 'n Go Play mat are definitely more than just a cosy foor decor, they are an invitation for your baby to begin and learn using their senses. As they begin to see and explore more, our play mat becomes a playtime essential.

Creative ideas:

  • Use our Play Mat as the centrepiece: Style your nursery layout around the Play Mat, placing it in a sunny corner or right in front of your reading nook or nursing chair.

  • Create a Play space: Surround the Play Mat with soft books, wooden toys, and rattles for a safe, Montessori-style play area.

  • Rotate textures and toys: Encourage curiosity by changing the items on and around the Play Mat every few days. Place our Play Mat in different areas of your home.

There is more to a baby mobile than their sweet appearance, they are packed with sensory benefits that help support your babies early development. Our handcrafted Bumble Bee mobile brings gentle movement and nature-inspired charm to any nursery which encourages your baby to visually follow objects, building early tracking and depth perception skills.

Creative ideas:

  • Hang it above the change table for a calming visual distraction during nappy changes. Or over the cot to help soothe fussiness, ease bedtime transitions, and build routines that feel familiar and safe.

  • Pair with natural decor: Pair our mobile with leafy wall decals, wooden shelves, and woven baskets for a grounded, earthy vibe.

  • Make it part of your theme: Our calming, gentle bees work perfectly for “nature-inspired” or "sweet little bee" nursery themes.
